Diamonds Cure All

Time really goes by quickly...It's hard to believe that I haven't posted anything since June...

In that space of time all kinds of adventures have come and gone...

We went on a Caribbean cruise starting June 26th and enough happened on the cruise to write a mini book...But...

We docked in the Grand Caymans aboard the Carnival Conquest...I misplaced my camera, went to the pursers office to file a "missing camera" report and then since the day was already a bummer, decided to not let it affect the rest of the day...If someone found the camera and turned it in, I would be home free...If it wasn't found then I would be out all the pictures I had taken to date and the camera...I could replace the camera but not the pictures...So I told my bride that we should go ashore and try to enjoy ourselves and make the best of a downer situation...(Surely someone honest would find and return it)...So we went ashore.

We had read about the 7 mile beach walk and since we didn't book it on the ship decided to let Lady Luck be our guide, take our chances and see what happens...We got off the ferry boat, looked around a bit and then asked where we could find a cab to take us to the 7 mile beach walk. We ended up in a van with about 10 or 12 other people crammed inside...The driver got in, looked at all of us and then asked if anyone had tickets for any of the tours...One lady said she did and then started to grill the cabbie about the best place to go...She had tickets for the Marriott...He said that the Royal Palms was good and that they had a lot of free stuff going on...She wanted to know why someone would tell her the Marriott was best if the Royal Palms was better, and on and on and on...He finally said " Look Lady, I was born and raised here...I should know what's good "...She was still arguing when we reached the first stop, the Royal Palms...

We got out of the taxi, thanked the driver and paid our $8.00 for the ride...After all we'd been through so far I thought a Bloody Mary was in order. We found the bar and ordered two each...It was $36.00 without tip...So much for the free part.

As we were sitting there enjoying the breeze, fresh air and all the commotion I noticed that they had wave runners for rent...I asked my bride if she would like to rent one and ride up and down in front of the beach just to check things out...We had ridden wave runners on the Colorado River and had a great time...She agreed but wondered what to do about her watch...It was a gift from our daughter, Beth and she didn't want to get it wet and ruin it..."Don't worry about it" I said...You won't be going into the water. She agreed and we rented a Sea Doo...I got on to drive and the attendant was helping her get on behind me...Before I knew it the Sea Doo was backing into her, knocked her off balance and into the Caribbean she went...But she held her wrist high and the watch never got wet.

We finally were aboard the Sea Doo and the attendant said that we had to go slowly out past the marker buoys...Once past them I could punch it and be on our way...On the way out to the buoys my bride kept reminding me that I promised not to go fast and I had to keep reassuring her that I wouldn't...when we got out to the end of the buoys I told her " now look, I'm going to slowly turn around so I can see where we have to come back in...then we can get on our way ". The problem was that I was going too slowly and as we made the turn the Sea Doo almost landed on it's side and in order to keep it uprighted I gave it some gas...as it lurched forward my bride lost her balance and landed head first in the drink...I immediately circled and got back to her...she was floating on her back, sputtering and totally flustered..." come on, give me your hand and I'll help you back up " I offered..." I CAN'T GET UP " she shouted..."OK, just hang on and we'll get you into shore...I know what we did wrong and when you get back on we'll be OK and we can do this again "...

That was the absolutely wrong thing to say...she was sputtering like a wet hen ( she WAS wet ) and she banged her fist on the side of the Sea Doo and shouted, "Elmer, take me home and take me home NOW!!!". The man gave us our money back and we ended up going on the longest, quietest beach walk we ever did take.

The next day we docked in Cozumel, Mexico. We decided to go on a 4 1/2 hour party boat tour but the tour wasn't scheduled until noon so we decided to look around town...We ended up at a place called Diamonds, International and, of course, everything was on sale....especially the diamond rings.

"I like that one ", she said..." Yes, dear ", I said.

Hey Pops! So other than the diamond ring what did it take to bury the hatchet? I bet you're glad you didn't have to remove it from your head first eh? Love to you and Mom and I'll see you on Friday at Juli's.
